Introduction
The Brazilian Center for Protein Research and Services (CBSP) is a project at the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Protein Chemistry (LBQP) of the University of Brasília (UnB). The CBSP started in 1987 and, with the support of Brazilian agencies, implemented the automated protein sequencing since 1990.
CBSP is a Core Facility, which the main goal is to research, collaborate and provide expert services in protein chemistry, helping researchers from universities, institutes and industries.
Some CBSP contributions include pioneer marks in the protein chemistry of Brazil. The group determined the first complete amino acid sequence in Brazil in 1985. It has then completed over 25 amino acid sequences (most of them already published and submitted to databases) and hundreds of N-termini and internal sequences, as well as performed thousands of amino acid analyses. Electrospray-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry of proteins was also pioneered by CBSP in Brazil.
Over sixty researchers from Brazilian institutions like Instituto Butantan, Embrapa, Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, UNIFESP (EPM), USP, UNESP, UFCE, UFMG, UFRJ, UnB and others have already been assisted by CBSP. Brazilian food, pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries have also been served by CBSP.
