Touring in Brazil

ICMF10 in Brazil would provide a unique opportunity for physicists to get to know this part of the World. Brazil is a multiracial country. Immigrants from Italy, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Japan and many African countries, among others, played an important role in the development of Brazil. They integrated themselves completely into the society, enriching the culture and helping to shape a country with a large diversity in many aspects of life. A visit to the South is full of surprises, with dances, food and folklore reminiscent of Europe. The North and the Northeast regions appear to be other countries, with different customs and typical festivities.

Pre- and  post Conference tours are now offered by CVC travel agency, the ICMF10 official travel agency. For more information, please enter directly in contact to Miss Josy Silva ou Miss Marcela Soto referring to ICMF10 at:

We hope you will not miss this chance to get to know part of this vast, exotic and beautiful Country with its very hospitable people.

The list below contains the tours which could be arranged through the ICMF10 official travel agency.

One of the main attractions of the Brazilian Northeast consists of the countless beaches present in the over 2,000-km long coastal line. The climate is mild year-round and the beaches have the characteristic coconut palms overhanging the clear white sand, bathed by warm blue-green waters. Many beaches look like natural swimming pools since the stoney reefs running parallel to the shoreline block the ocean waves. There are hotels in all price categories on the beaches in the vicinity of Recife, Natal, Salvador, Fortaleza and other coastal cities in the Northeast. Staying in one of them on the weekend before or after the conference, or during a whole week, would be an unforgettable experience. For those who like diving, the island of Fernando de Noronha, 360 km off the coast of Natal, is considered one of the best diving areas in the world.

Flying into Rio is a beautiful sight. Whether it be at night or during the day. The visitor quickly discovers why Rio is known as the Marvelous City. Rio is nestled between the mountains and the sea. Its magnificent shoreline includes charming bays and beautiful beaches, dotted with islands up and down the coast. The city's inhabitants are known as "Cariocas". They are friendly, carefree people who always seem to find time for the pleasures of good living. The city itself never sleeps. Rio is also an important center for fashion. New styles and clothing concepts are always available in elegant stores and boutiques. Hundreds of restaurants offer a wide variety of cuisine from all over the world.

A number of local tours are available to help visitors appreciate the many sights and sounds of Rio. Among its many options are the Sugar Loaf and the Corcovado with the famous statue of Christ. Rio's beaches are filled with all sorts of people who come to relax in the sun, participate in numerous outdoor sports (swimming, surfing, soccer, wind surfing, jogging, cycling, volleyball, etc.) or just to meet with friends. The beaches are the most important social center in Rio.

Bahia is Brasil's most historic state, most African state and one of the most beautiful. The city is full of colonial relics - including many richly decorated churches, one for every day of the year according to popular belief. Bahia is the artistic soul of Brazil. All the components that give Brazil its special flavor and flair, its music, dance, art, literature and faith have been heavily influenced by Bahia. What you will discover is a city and cultural identity unlike any other in the world!

Manaus was named after a tribe of Indians which inhabited the region where the Solimões and Negro rivers joined to form the Amazon. Manaus is located in the heart of the Amazon, 1,500 miles up the Amazon River. Just the names of the "Amazon" and "Manaus" are enough to stir the emotions of most men and women. Forget African safaris or treks through the Far East, it is still the Amazon that is regarded as the unattainable, the planet's final mystery.

Brasília is the dream city of the future, a city born to be a nation's capital, a city designed to open up the untouched interior of Brazil to the 20th century. Even though it has been officially functioning since 1960, the dramatic lines of its buildings and overall plan of its streets and plazas make Brasília unique. During the tour there will be visits to the country's Congress and Senate, the Presidential Palace, Supreme Court, Foreign Office, ministries, etc.

In the open spaces of the Pantanal, wildlife is visible to the most casual observer! If you like to see animals in their natural state, the Pantanal - with the greatest concentration of fauna in the New World - should not be missed! A vast swampland in the center of South America, the Pantanal is about half the size of France, some 230,000 square km spread across Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. Something less than 100,000 square km is in Bolivia and, the rest is in Brazil, split between the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.

The Iguaçu River arises in the coastal mountains of Paraná and Santa Catarina, the Serra do Mar, at the modest elevation of 1,300 m. The 275 falls are over three km wide and 80 meters high, which makes them wider than Victoria, higher than Niagara and more beautiful than either. Neither words nor photographs do them justice; they must be seen and heard. It's what the romantic poets had in mind when they spoke of the awesome and sublime.
